It takes months for the community team to come and see us, I have to chase in the end. Finally we have a diagnosis of dementia, possibly alzheimer's. They prescribe a low dose of tablet that is supposed to slow the progression of the disease, I hope it works but to be honest it's a tablet to remove or ease the symptoms of dementia that I want to see.
Much needed break away with friends arranged, not too far away and everyone happy with the plans.
A device called a Pebbell has been a great success. It is a small round tracker that clips on to a key ring. Mum is delighted with it as we have called it her mobile phone, she just presses a large button and it calls my mobile then my husbands if I don't answer. What a brilliant piece of kit.
Left detailed instructions, day one and overnight a success. Call in the morning and mum wants to do some washing but can't work out the machine. We get though that bit with some confusing instructions but they seem to work. Next morning we can't get a reply from the house phone. Pebbel shows mum in the house or garden so not too worried.
I then receive a call from the fire brigade, they are at the house. Apparently a passer by saw mum at the gate saying she needed to get out and back home, she thought she and the dogs were in Nottingham.
We arrive home, fire fighter with mum having a cup of tea, she seems calm and doesn't really realise that we had been away. Lesson learned, we absolutely cannot leave her alone overnight, she thinks she has been on holiday again.
